HOUSTON, Sept. 11 (Xinhua) -- For the United States, hydroelectricity was the highest renewable electricity generation source in 2017, the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) said Tuesday.

EIA figure showed that hydroelectricity provided 7 percent of the country's total electricity. By 2019, however, wind generation is expected to surpass hydro, based on the latest forecasts in EIA's Short-Term Energy Outlook.

According to the organization, hydroelectricity represented the largest share of electricity generation among renewable sources in 28 states in 2007 but retained that status in only 19 states in 2017 as wind and solar became more common.

Wind was the most prevalent renewable electricity generation source in 16 states in 2017, and solar was the most prevalent renewable generation source in 7 states. Electricity generated from biomass -- which includes wood, wood waste, landfill gas, and other biogenic material -- had the second-largest generation share in three states last year. Enditem
