Gibraltar students read their works for Dickinson Poetry at UUFDC

EPHRAIM - Student poets from Gibraltar High School will be featured in the next Dickinson Poetry Series event at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Door County.

In the first year of the Dickinson Poetry Series, 2009-10, a Gibraltar student was a featured reader. The reading was such a success that the fellowship felt compelled to encourage more student readers. Since then, the series has held one reading each year just for students, and audiences have said they have been moved by the depth and poignancy of the student poems.

Lauren Bremer, an English teacher at Gibraltar, teaches, coaches and inspires the poetry. Several of the students reading their work this year have read previously in the series.

Among the students schedueld to read their poetry this year are Mason Bauldry, Spencer Berndt, Avalynn Clayton, Ethan Farnham, Kathleen Jackson, Sarah Kifer, Maggie Parzych, Gracie Richards and Paige Thompson.

Named for renowned American poet Emily Dickinson, the series features a local or regional poet reading from his or her works the second Wednesday of each month, followed by an open mic opportunity for others to read their poetry. A reception with the featured poet follows. The public is welcome, and there is no charge to attend.

Gibraltar High School students read their poetry at 7 p.m. Feb. 14 at Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 10341 Wisconsin 42, Ephraim. For more information, call 920-854-7559 or visit uufdc.org.
