A nine year old boy is carrying a ruler from math class out to the schoolyard. He is leading a small group of children his age. He walks with purpose, happy to be outside and proud to be in charge of his group. The group arrives at its destination to start a treasured project.

The children have studied, planned, and designed a raised bed garden. They have learned which crops grow in their area, when they like to be planted, and when they should be harvested. They have recorded the amount of space each crop needs to grow. They have agreed upon the amount of crops to plant, and have used those numbers to design the size and shape of the raised bed.
