Funeral Service For Jordan McNair Planned

The 19-year-old University of Maryland student from Randallstown will be laid to rest this week.

BALTIMORE, MD — A Randallstown student-athlete known as a quiet leader will be laid to rest this week. Jordan McNair died on June 13. He was 19 years old.

McNair was a football player at the University of Maryland, where he was reportedly majoring in kinesiology.

"Jordan was an incredible young man, and his passion and enthusiasm made him an invaluable and beloved member of our team. Jordan was a hard worker, and he always had a smile on his face," University of Maryland Football Coach DJ Durkin said in a statement.

McNair, an alumnus of the McDonogh School and Deer Park Middle Magnet, went to Maryland so he could be close to his family, according to The Diamondback, the University of Maryland student newspaper.

His friends described him as someone who led by his actions.

"He was an extremely talented football player and a humble and genuine human being," Durkin said. "He embodied the essence of what it means to be a teammate."

The cause of his death has not been disclosed. He was hospitalized after a team workout on May 29. The university has enlisted an outside agency to review the case to ensure proper protocols were followed, The Diamondback reported.

McNair was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he received a liver transplant, according to a GoFundMe campaign set up to assist his family with medical costs. He died June 13.

The viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 19, at Wylie Funeral Home, 9200 Liberty Road, Randallstown, MD 21133.

The funeral service for Jordan McNair will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 20, at New Psalmist Baptist Church, 6020 Marian Drive, Baltimore, MD 21215.

Burial will take place immediately after the funeral service, at King Memorial Park, 8710 Dogwood Road, Baltimore, MD 21244.
