HS rivalry game in Dothan postponed in Hurricane Michael's aftermath

Dothan High and Northview -- the two public high schools in Dothan -- have played football every year since 1978.

They'll play this year a day later than planned.

The Dothan City Schools announced today on Twitter that the game, scheduled for Friday, has been cancelled, in the aftermath of Hurricane Michael. The AHSAA later will announced the game will be played Saturday.

The school system has previously closed schools today and tomorrow. In most school systems, all after-school and extracurricular activities are cancelled when school is not in session.

AHSAA teams are required to play all reigion opponents, and Dothan has no open dates remaining this season.

The game has been rescheduled for Saturday night.

The AHSAA later emailed a list of games that have been postponed:

Class 6A: Dothan at Northview, moved to Saturday, 7 p.m.
Class 4A:
Ashford at Headland, moved to Saturday, 7 p.m.
Class 2A:
Barbour County at Ariton, moved to Monday, 7 p.m.
Class 2A:
New Brockton at Samson, moved to Nov. 2, 7 p.m.

Hurricane Michael made landfall along the Florida coast near Panama City on Wednesday and quickly moved inland, causing widespread damage in Dothan and surrounding areas of Alabama's Wiregrass. Thousands were left without power.

"We have been a part of an unprecedented catastrophic event," Dothan Mayor Mark Saliba told The Dothan Eagle.

It's unclear if other school systems in the Wiregrass will also cancel Friday-night football games.

Updated: Oct. 11, 2018, 12:04 p.m., to add info from AHSAA, again at 1:27 p.m. to add list of postponed game from AHSAA, and again at 6:24 p.m., to confirm Northview-Dothan is now Saturday.
