A Middleton man faces multiple charges after a police chase on Friday ended in Ossipee.Matthew McConnell, 27, was arrested after a pursuit and collision on Route 16 late Friday afternoon. McConnell has been charged with driving while intoxicated (second offense), reckless driving, misconduct after an accident, disobeying a police officer, driving after revocation or suspension of driver's license (second offense), transporting alcoholic beverages and possession of a controlled drug.Sgt. James Fogarty was patrolling northbound on Route 16 at about 5:26 p.m. when he was forced to avoid being struck by a Honda CRV being driven by McConnell, police said. McConnell's SUV was traveling southbound in the northbound lane, police said."He continued southbound, passed a vehicle on the right hand side, in the area of Boulder Hill and completely lost control of the vehicle," Fogarty said.Fogarty chased McConnell, but he refused to stop. After crossing into the southbound lane in the area of Boulder Hill, McConnell's SUV struck a motor home that was traveling north, investigators said. Both vehicles were damaged, police said, but no one was hurt in the motor home."It very much could have been worse. It's very fortunate that he only struck that one vehicle and nobody was injured," Fogarty said.McConnell's SUV had two flat tires and was forced to stop, but officers said he continued to refuse arrest before being taken into custody between Routes 17 and 161 in Ossipee.McConnell was medically evaluated at Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro and then transported to the Carroll County Jail in Ossipee. McConnell remains in jail pending an arraignment.
