McFERREN JOHN ARCHIBALD McFERREN, age 95, of Aurora, Ohio, passed from this life on December 5, 2014 at Independence Village of Aurora. John was born November 29, 1919 in Wooster, Ohio to the late Carl and Harriet (Read) McFerren, but during the Depression his family moved to Cleveland where he graduated from John Adams High School and from Fenn College (now Cleveland State University). After Pearl Harbor, John joined the Navy, serving as an officer on a Sub-Chaser in the South Pacific, and on a Patrol Craft in the North Sea. Between these tours of duty, he returned to Cleveland to marry his college sweetheart, Doris Johnson. After the war, he and Doris settled in Cleveland, where he began his career at Ohio Bell Telephone Company as an accountant. He and Doris moved to Lyndhurst where they raised their three children while continuing to work at Ohio Bell. John rose to the position of Assistant Comptroller before retiring in 1983. John held leadership roles in many organizations, including in the churches where he and Doris worshipped. In retirement, John and Doris enjoyed traveling to see old friends and new places. In 1981 they moved to Aurora where he could nurture an ever-growing garden. John loved his family and had many friends from every part of his life. He cared for Doris after she developed Alzheimer's disease until she died in 1998. He became re-acquainted with Jane Rose of Aurora in 1999, and they married that same year. They enjoyed 12 happy years together until her death in 2012. John retained his infectious sense of humor throughout his final days. He will be very sadly missed. He is survived by his children Susan (Rick) Morey of Berkeley Heights, NJ; Linda (Jim) Lawyer of Aurora, OH; and Scott (Marilyn) McFerren of Saline, MI. He was adored by grandchildren Shelley (Geoff) Duncan of Stow, OH; Christopher (Laura) Lawyer of Denver, CO; Colin (Emily) McFerren of Twinsburg, OH; Becki (Paul) Dub of Castle Rock, CO; Caitlin (Jared) Moore of Philadelphia, PA; Alissa (Bill) Arnold of Stow, OH; Nathaniel Morey of Berkeley Heights, NJ; and Eleanor Morey of Brooklyn, NY. He also leaves seven beloved great-grandchildren. Jane's daughters, Debbie (Dennis) Buss of Aurora and Kathy (Pete) Schueler of Richfield and their families also greatly feel his loss. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Keith McFerren and sister Marilyn Cole. There will be a memorial service at the Church in Aurora, 146 South Chillicothe Road, Aurora, Ohio, on December 13 at 11:00AM with Rev. Kevin Horak officiating. A private gravesite interment service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions, if you wish, to The Church in Aurora Endowment, Crossroads Hospice, or Independence Village of Aurora.
