Xcel Energy Minnesota observed its seventh annual Day of Service Sept. 8.

Xcel Energy employees, retirees and family members volunteered with Feeding Our Communities Partners, an organization that strives to engage the community in solving youth hunger.

About 30 volunteers put together food packs for area students and organize food products within a warehouse in Mankato.

In addition to Mankato, Xcel Energy volunteers participated in volunteer projects in the Twin Cities, Hastings, Monticello, St. Cloud, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School

Jonah Kramer, son of Peter and Linda Kramer of Gibbon and sophomore at Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School, has earned the highest possible ACT composite score of 36.

The exam was June 9.

On average, only one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the ACT earn a top score. In the U.S. high school graduating class of 2017, only 2,760 out of more than 2 million graduates who took the ACT earned a composite score of 36.

Tractor Supply

Tractor Supply recently named Diana Sargent of St. James as a winner in the company’s second annual “Great Neighbor” Essay Contest Sargent was one of five students honored by Tractor Supply during a ceremony at the Minnesota State Fair.

The contest encouraged youth across the country to submit a short essay detailing how a memorable 4-H or FFA experience has influenced their development as a great neighbor in their community.

Alzheimer’s Association

Mankato Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 8 raised $122,000 and more than 700 people participated.

Top Team honors went to Team Gibbon. St. Peter Forget-Me-Nots (Benedictine Living Community) was named the Top Longterm Care Provider Team.

Mary Roach of the Henning Honeys received the Top Individual Honors.

Buena Vista University

Area residents who attended Buena Vista University in Storm Lake, Iowa, were honored at an annual student recognition dinner.

Aaron Pluym of St. James was awarded The Ed Bock and Henry Olsen Travel award. Every year at BVU students have amazing opportunities to complete internships that help prepare them for their careers, do significant research in their discipline and travel nationally and internationally. This support is made available through the generous contributions of alumni and friends.

Pluym also received the Mac Hornecker Artistic Enrichment Grant, a competitive grant awarded to a BVU art student for financial help to accomplish an art project, art related experience or internship which will enrich their artistic future.

Tonia Henning of New Ulm received the Clifford A. Rae Academic Achievement Award, which provides

support for nine pre-qualified, high performing BVU business and science majors each academic year.

Tyler Tennyson of Truman was elected to the Student Senate by the student body to represent the student voice on campus committees, consider concerns of the student body and assign student organizations’ financial allocations.

Lindsey Miles of Truman rand Ella Wiebusch of

St. Peter received Academic Excellence Awards. This award is given to students whose cumulative gradepoint averages are 3.75 or greater.

Wiebusch was inducted into Alpha Chi, a national honor society recognizing scholarship in all disciplines, promoting academic achievement and encouraging its members to continue their lives as scholars. Membership is restricted to 10 percent of the senior class having a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or greater and five percent of the junior class having a cumulative grade point average of 3.65 or greater.

Gonzaga University

Stephen Joyce of Sleepy Eye earned placement on the spring semester dean’s list for Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.

Students must earn a 3.5 to 3.84 grade-point average to be listed.

Grove City College

Sam Farley of Mankato is a recent graduate of Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

Farley earned a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering.

Marquette University

Area residents were named to the spring semester dean’s list for Marquette University in Milwaukee.

Emma Hartmann of Mankato and Katrina Reeder of Montgomery received the academic honor.

Luther College

Allison Peters of Mankato was named to 2018 spring semester dean’s List at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

To be named to the list, a student must earn a semester grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale and must complete at least 12 credit hours with 10 hours of conventional grades.

St. John’s University

Tanner Johnson of Mankato participated in commencement ceremonies at Saint John’s University.

Johnson received a bachelor of arts degree in political science.
