Road By Old Town Alexandria Apartment Construction Reopens

The one block of Montgomery Street had been closed at the construction site of a future apartment building.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—A portion of Montgomery Street that was closed for construction has reopened, the city announced. The one block of Montgomery Street between North St. Asaph Street and North Pitt Street was closed for around a year for reconstruction. It is open to vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic.

The closure was due to work by city departments and a private development contractor. An apartment building called Gables Old Town North is under construction at 530 First Street.

The City timed the road work to coincide with the construction, which is at the former ABC/Giant Food site, to save time and money. The public-private partnership with Gables Construction Group allowed the city to save half a million dollars on the project.

The work included asphalt resurfacing, rebuilding the structure of the roadway, restoration of collapsed water pipes, reconstruction of brick sidewalks on the south side of the street, new curb and gutter work, new pavement markings, and tree wells and trees along the south side.

The 232-apartment Gables Old Town North broke ground in spring 2016 and is expected to open in early 2019, according to its website. Some amenities will be a rooftop deck with view of the Potomac River, pool, a West Elm location, Oak Steakhouse and other ground-level retail, an outdoor game area, fire pits and a theatre.
