San Antonio FC Hosts Real Monarchs SLC at Toyota Field

San Antonio FC News Release
SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio FC (5-5-7) will host Real Monarchs SLC (13-4-2) at Toyota Field on Saturday, July 21 at 7:30 p.m. The match marks the fourth matchup overall between the two clubs and first this season, and is the first of three matches in the span of eight days for the Alamo City club.
SAFC will look to get back into winning form at home after falling 0-3 on the road to Orange County SC last weekend. The club will host the Western Conference leaders in just their second-ever matchup at Toyota Field. Last season, the two teams played to a 2-2 draw in San Antonio.
The Monarchs will aim to gain ground on second-place Reno 1868 FC with a win in the Alamo City. The club currently sits in first place in the Western Conference with 41 points, however Reno trails them by just four points. While the Monarchs have earned 13 wins this season, all four of their losses have come while playing on the road.
"Their position in the standings is irrelevant to us as a team," SAFC Midfielder Charlie Ward said. "We look at every opponent the same, whether they're in first or last place, we'll treat them with respect. We're looking to win every game and it's important to get a win at home in front of our fans and get on a good run. There are 17 games left and we have time to really do something with our season and make a push for the playoffs."
SAFC most recently faced Real Monarchs at Rio Tinto Stadium in late 2017, where the Alamo City club earned a 2-1 win in dramatic fashion thanks to a stoppage-time goal from defender Stephen McCarthy.
For SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell, Saturday's match presents a challenge that the team is familiar with, and scoring the opening goal of the match may prove to be crucial. So far this season, three of the club's five wins have come when they score the first goal of the match.
"Every game in this league is tight, and obviously goals change that," Powell said. "We want to make sure we come in organized, and I'm sure they're doing the same. There are a lot of quality teams in this league, so we expect every game to be a tight one."
Following the match against Real Monarchs, SAFC will host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC at Toyota Field on Wednesday, July 25 in the USL Game of the Week. The club will then travel to face OKC Energy FC on Saturday, July 28.
