The Petroglyphs or rock carvings found in Gobustan date back nearly 40,000 years. They are some of the oldest petroglyphs in the world. They are testimony to human inhabitation in the area during the wet period that followed the last Ice Age. It depicts their life in prehistoric times.

The well-preserved carvings show humans travelling on boats, men hunting animals, camel caravans, sun and stars and women dancing, among others.
