Day in History: Ground broken for State Hospital Religious Center

1991 – 25 years ago

• The 127-year-old red schoolhouse near Plainview has been moved down the road by the South Troy Wesleyan Methodist Church. The school was built in 1864 and became well known because it was the only red schoolhouse in the entire area. The building was used until Troy students were consolidated into the Plainview school district in 1964.

• Senior Dan Adams ran for 245 yards on 39 carries and scored three touchdowns to lead LeRoy-Ostrander past Preston-Fountain 39-13 in high school football.

1966 – 50 years ago

• The first shovelfuls of earth were turned atop the knoll at the center of the Rochester State Hospital grounds where construction of a $350,000 multipurpose, multifaith religious activity center will begin. The structure will replace scattered worship points in basements of other buildings on the grounds.

• Tuesday of this week marks the deadline for city residents to register to vote in the Nov. 8 general election. Only city residents must register. No county, township or village conducts registration.

1941 – 75 years ago

• The J.D. Cutting general store at Rock Dell was destroyed by a swiftly moving fire leveling the building to the ground. The fire was discovered at 3 a.m., and by the time the Byron Fire Department arrived, nothing in the building could be saved.

• Two Rochester boys; James Whiting and Jack Har launched a 5-cent balloon filled with hydrogen gas with their names attached to it. The balloon was found in the state of New York more than 900 miles away.

1916 – 100 years ago

• The city council has ordered the Rochester Fire Department to remove and confiscate 300 pounds of dynamite locked in a wooden chest in one of the downtown alleys. The chest contains enough explosives to blow buildings into smithereens.

• Eager to become more proficient in the game of golf, local enthusiasts are continuing to make use of the new links course laid out west of town.

Ten years ago:President George W. Bush signed legislation authorizing tough interrogation of terror suspects and smoothing the way for trials before military commissions. America's official population passed the 300 million mark, fueled by a growing number of immigrants and their children. Megan Meier, the 13-year-old victim of a cyberbullying hoax, died a day after hanging herself at home in Dardenne Prairie, Missouri. CBS News correspondent Christopher Glenn died in Norwalk, Connecticut, at age 68.

Financier Carl Lindner Jr., who used his experience running the family dairy store to build a business empire whose reach included baseball, banks and bananas, died at age 92.

One year ago:Thousands of migrants seeking a better life in Western Europe surged into Slovenia using a new route after Hungary sealed its border with Croatia. The final US Airways flight landed in Philadelphia, completing the last leg of its roundtrip journey. (The US Airways brand disappeared as the result of a merger with American Airlines.) The Kansas City Royals rolled to a 6-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jay for a 2-0 lead in the AL Championship Series. The New York Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in their NL Championship Series opener.
