A mum spent four days dressed as Freddie Mercury in a bid to raise awareness of HIV and Aids.

Sarah Smith, 37, from Tonypandy recreated some of the Queen frontman’s most iconic looks topping them off with a fake moustache and sparkling microphone.

She kept the outfits, which were made using photos of the star, on throughout each day going to college and completing the school run with her daughter Kiara, seven.

She said: “Taking my daughter to school, a lot of parents said they thought it was quite brave to go around dressed like that.

“They were asking me what it was for.”

She added: “My daughter thought it was quite funny. She wouldn’t dress up but she asked me to get her a T-shirt with Freddie’s face on it and she wore that to after school club.

“Some older, college age kids have come up to me in the street and said ‘what are you wearing?’”

The brave stunt was to mark the singer’s birthday on September 5 and took place last week from September 4 - 9.

Sarah wore a white vest top for one look and found a man’s waistcoat to recreate his look from the front of his 1992 self-titled solo album. She even cut her hair.

The ‘Freddie for the Day’ initiative was started by the Mercury Phoenix Trust, a charity founded in the singer’s memory by band mates Brian May and Roger Taylor and manager Jim Beech. It raises money for global HIV and AIDS projects.

Eighties music super fan Sarah first started dressing as the musician three years ago and is currently making a replica of the pink suit Freddie wore in the Great Pretender music video. She plans to wear it at Christmas for another event.

She said: “When I first got into it was probably about the mid eighties. Around the time of ‘It’s a kind of magic’.

“As I got older I got into more of his earlier stuff and went back from there.”

She first dressed up with her sister Luna, a dancer from Cardiff .

Sarah, who has also imitated Cher and Madonna, also organised a tea party in honour of the star.
