SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- The San Francisco 49ers announced Monday that Tom Gamble has been elevated from the title of senior personnel executive to assistant general manager.

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke explained the promotion in a statement.

“Tom is an accomplished talent evaluator who grew up around the game of football,” Baalke said. “Having spent the last 28 years of his life in the NFL, his wealth of experience has been invaluable to our organization for almost a decade. Tom is a hard-working professional and, more importantly, a good man. We are excited he will continue to play an integral role in the development of our team.”

Gamble is actually in his second stint with the team after a two-year departure in which he worked with new Niners coach Chip Kelly in Philadelphia. Gamble rejoined San Francisco in January 2015 after his two seasons as the Eagles' vice president of player personnel. But before that, Gamble had earned a good reputation in league circles for his work over eight seasons in San Francisco, Philadelphia and Indianapolis.

In Gamble's first stint with the 49ers, he worked in a variety of roles, culminating with a two-year stint as the team's director of player personnel. He handled the role of director of pro personnel from 2005 to 2010.

Gamble is entering his 29th season in the NFL and 10th with the 49ers. He's had previous stops in Indianapolis, Carolina, New York (Jets) and Baltimore.
