A COMMUNITY centre serving the elderly in Catterick Garrison has been relaunched under a new name.

The St John’s Community Centre has been renamed The Bridge to better reflect the service it provides.

The former name was a source of confusion as potential users thought it was associated with the St John Ambulance or a religious organisation.

As well as a new name, the former church building in Shute Road has new branding, website and marketing material.

The Bridge is an adult day service providing day care at the centre on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. It also offers a range of home support services.

Members, staff and volunteers and local community leaders joined local MP Rishi Sunak to officially open the revamped centre.

The relaunch has been financially supported by North Yorkshire County Council.

Deidre Edgar, the chair of The Bridge, said the new name had been chosen because the centre aimed to bridge the gap between an older person going into hospital or nursing home.

“Our main aim is to support individuals to keep their their independence and to live in their own homes as long as possible” she added.

“We hope ‘Bridge’ conveys strength, reliability, and a route to link people from their homes into the community.”

Mr Sunak said: “The Bridge is doing great work helping older people get the best out of life with a range of excellent services which boost independence while also combatting loneliness.”

Centre members enjoy a range of activities and refreshments throughout the day. Regular visits are made by healthcare professionals including an acupuncturist and chiropodist, as well as a mobile hairdresser. Home support services include help with internet shopping and a sitting service.
