Classroom birthdays and parties are looking very different in one Wisconsin School District.

A health and wellness policy has been added, and one local principal is speaking out on his district's current policy.

Appleton Area Schools no longer will allow students to bring in snacks to share with classmates.

The district says it's about promoting wellness and safety for medical conditions or allergies.

Locally, Altoona's Middle School principal says there's a designated snack time also called second chance breakfast and students are allowed to bring snacks for birthdays.

"In all situations, were aware of and if there's a severe food allergy, the teacher does a nice job at communicating that out to families to bring appropriate food into the classroom," said Altoona Middle School Principal Dan Peggs.

Peggs said the Altoona School District follows an overall wellness policy.

He also says there are peanut-free zones in the lunchroom.
