Wonder Lake Man Dies at Route 12 Scene of 3-Vehicle, Head-On Crash

McHenry County Sheriff's Office investigators are trying to determine what led to the Friday morning crash in unincorporated Richmond.

RICHMOND, IL - A 28-year-old Wonder Lake man died Friday at the scene of a three-vehicle, head-on collision in unincorporated Richmond.

A preliminary McHenry County Sheriff's Office investigation found that around 5:45 a.m. on July 28, the man crossed the center line while driving a 2004 Lincoln Navigator SUV eastbound on U.S. Route 12 near Kuhn Road. In doing so, he collided with two westbound vehicles a 2011 Toyota RAV4 and a 2016 GMC Acadia.

Emergency responders pronounced the Lincoln's driver dead at the scene. Richmond Fire Protection District paramedics took the Toyota and GMC's drivers — a 74-year-old Fox Lake woman and 47-year-old Ingleside man, respectively — to Centegra Hospital for treatment. They were both listed in good condition.

There were no other occupants in any of the vehicles, deputies said. All three vehicles' airbags deployed and all drivers were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash. Investigators had not yet determined late Friday afternoon what caused the Lincoln's driver to cross the center line.

Route 12 was closed for about five hours during the accident investigation. Members of the Richmond and Spring Grove Police Departments and Wonder Lake Fire Protection District assisted at the scene. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and McHenry County Coroner’s Office are heading up the investigation.
