UPDATE (Nov. 27):

Two people are dead after a crash that shut down Eastside Highway (Route 340) in Crimora on Sunday afternoon.

According to Virginia State Police, a 1997 Toyota 4Runner was traveling south when it crossed the center line ahead of a curve in the wooded section of road and struck a northbound 2007 Ford F-150 pickup truck head-on in the 1600 block of the highway.

The driver of the Toyota, 28-year-old Kelsey Hypes of Waynesboro, died at the scene. She had two passengers in her car: her husband and 3-year-old child. They were both flown to UVA Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Police say their conditions are not life-threatening, however.

The driver of the Ford, 28-year-old Daniel Simmons of Crimora, also died at the scene. He had one passenger: an 11-year-old boy, who was also flown to UVA for serious injuries. Police first identified the child as Simmons' son, but later corrected their report. According to friends and family, the child was Simmons' nephew.

Everyone involved was wearing a seatbelt and the 3-year-old was in a child safety seat.

Police say investigation continues, but Trooper J.D. Cash, the investigating officer, has concluded that alcohol was not a factor.
