Designer Robert Edward Stannard dies at 90

robert stannardCHATHAM, N.J. – Robert Edward Stannard, a long-time furniture industry designer, died on April 4. He was 90.

Born in Orange, N.J., he grew up in Madison, N.J. He attended Drew University and later joined the U.S. Army band on Governors Island in 1946. He graduated from the Pratt Institute in New York City with a degree in Architectural Design.

Over the years, he specialized in furniture design and eventually established his own company, Stannard Design Associates in Chatham and Madison, N.J.

Having traveled the world for design inspiration, he also belonged to the American Society of Furniture Designers, where he served as president and on the Board of Directors.

He also belonged to the Kiwanis Club of Chatham and Madison and also served on its Board of Directors and as its chairperson of music. He also was a member of the Chatham United Methodist Church and served as a long-time member of its choir, the music committee, the Board of Trustees and the church and society Committee.

He was preceded in death by his parents Richard B. Stannard and Virginia Reynal Stannard.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Hilary; a brother; six children; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and six great-great grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. April 28 – also in honor of Bob and Hilary’s 34th wedding anniversary – at the Chatham United Methodist Church in Chatham, N.J.
