Morning Bell: Top state teachers named

Happy Friday! The state Department of Education has named the 12 finalists for 2019 Oklahoma State Teacher of the Year. They are: 

Teresa Lansford (Norman); Jessica Robinson (Altus Public Schools); Warren Neff (Bartlesville); V. Jannean Thompson (Berryhill); Carol Hunsperger (Grove); Jenny Morphis (Hilldale); Amy Greenhaw (Jenks); Michelle Shelton (Noble); Catherine Adams (Piedmont); Shari Gateley (Putnam City); Natalie Fielden (Sapulpa); and Rebecca Oglesby (Yukon).

Committee has five finalists for new Lee School name

The committee charged with giving Lee School a new name has five finalists for what the school will finally be called, reports the Tulsa World. None of them have the Lee surname.

The five potential names chosen by the second ad-hoc committee are Abraham Lincoln (16th president of the United States), Clara Luper (civil rights activist), Woody Guthrie (folk singer), Maple Ridge (neighborhood) and Council Oak (tree at 18th Street and Cheyenne Avenue).

Those five names will be presented at the first of three charrettes — community meetings — this weekend. The names were provided to the World Wednesday.

Lawton teens mowing lawns for school supplies

While some students are taking it easy this summer, a group of teenagers in Lawton are spending their summer break mowing lawns to raise money for school supplies.

"Everyday, we get up at like 9 o clock cut grass and ask people,” Elijah Smith, 15, told KSWO.
