LA HABRA  — A 16-year-old boy who police were told “wanted to shoot something and be on the news” was wounded by an officer Monday morning in La Habra, authorities said.

Around 9:35 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 200 block of South Monte Vista Street after being notified by a girl that her brother had armed himself with a gun following a family dispute, La Habra Sgt. Jose Rocha said.

“The caller advised that the suspect left on foot, armed with the firearm and stated that he wanted to shoot something and be on the news,” the sergeant said in a statement.

The incident had followed several days of disputes.

The boy was found in Guadalupe Park, in the 300 block of South Walnut Street, where he was shot after a brief encounter with an officer, Rocha said.

“The officer attempted to contact the suspect and a shooting occurred, with the officer shooting the suspect,” Rocha said.

After being shot, the teenager fled and was later found at Knudson Street and 3rd Avenue. He no longer had his firearm, which was located nearby, Rocha said.

The boy was transported by ambulance to UCI Medical Center and is in stable condition, according to Rocha.

He was in custody on suspicion of attempted homicide, criminal threats, and brandishing a firearm.

No officers were injured.
