A substitute teacher burned a student with a lighter after the student failed to complete a classroom assignment, police say.
Alexander Jorge, 47, was arrested Wednesday and charged with endangering the welfare of a child and reckless endangerment, police say.
Jorge burned the 13-year-old student on his arm Tuesday at the New millennium Business Academy after the boy failed to write a 3 page assignment in just 20 minutes, according to police.
Police say Jorge threatened to burn students who did not complete the assignment on time.
Jorge was arrested at the 44th Precinct Wednesday just one day after the incident took place inside of the school classroom at 1000 Teller Ave.
Police say the student suffered a bruise but it is unclear if he received treatment at a hospital.
In a statement to News 12, Department of Education spokesperson Doug Cohen wrote, "These are deeply troubling allegations, and we immediately suspended this substitute teacher without pay pending the resolution of his criminal case."
Officials say Jorge has been a substitute teacher at the school since 2014.
