October 17, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 08:19 am IST - THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

At least six persons sustained serious injuries and over 50 others minor injuries after two Kerala State Road Transport Corporation buses collided near Vettinad Market Junction at Vattappara on MC Road here on Friday.

According to the Vattappara police, the accident took place around 12.15 p.m., when the driver of a Super Express bus on its way to Ernakulam from Thiruvananthapuram lost control of the vehicle after he applied sudden brakes.

The bus then lurched onto the other side of the road and collided head on with a Chalakudy-Thiruvananthapuram Super Fast.

Major accident averted

The police said that had the collision been a few metres further ahead, both the buses would have crashed into a roadside canal. Local residents and the Vattappara police rushed the injured passengers to various hospitals, including Government Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, and a few other private hospitals en route to the capital from Vattappara. A majority of the 70-odd passengers were treated at the MCH, with hospital officials saying 56 people, including six with serious injuries, were given immediate attention.

With the police alerting the MCH officials as they were on the way to the hospital with the injured, a medical team of nearly 30 staff from various departments were ready with emergency care for the accident victims.

Around 30 men and 25 women were among those who were treated at the MCH, while some of the injured were treated at a private hospital, near Venpalavattom. Both the drivers were among those with serious injuries, including fractures, but the condition of none was critical, the police said.
