WASHINGTON, DC — The top three US hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery are the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio (number 1), the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN (number 2), and New York-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City (number 3), according to US News & World Report latest rankings.
These three hospitals also took the top three spots—in the same order—in last year's rankings.
The remainder of the top 10 hospitals for cardiology and heart surgery got shuffled around a bit this year, compared with last year.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA holds the number 4 spot this year, up from number 10 last year, while Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston fell from the number-4 spot to the number 5 spot.
Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD moved up from the number 9 spot last year to the number 6 spot this year. Duke University Hospital, Durham, NC, number 5 last year, dropped to the number-11 spot.

Overall, across all specialties, US News named Mayo Clinic as the top hospital on the honor roll, followed by the Cleveland Clinic and Johns Hopkins Hospital. The honor roll is a distinction awarded to 20 hospitals that deliver "exceptional treatment across multiple areas of care," the magazine says.
The methodology for the US News rankings is largely based on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators, the magazine notes.
This year's rankings are based on 5 years of Medicare data—covering more than 60 million hospitalizations—as opposed to 3 years of Medicare data used in previous rankings. US News also improved its measurements to avoid penalizing hospitals for treating low-income patients or for accepting high-risk cases transferred from other hospitals. The magazine also refined how it measures volume to account for both the Medicare Advantage and Medicare fee-for-service populations in the Best Hospitals Rankings.
US News also improved how patient safety is measured and made several adjustments to better measure patient outcomes after treatment and surgery, they say.
In addition, the magazine recognized 535 Best Regional Hospitals, ranked by state and metropolitan area based on their performance in both complex specialty care and common procedures and conditions.
Best Hospitals is part of US News' patient portal, designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care. The rankings are produced by US News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, NC.
