The ladies on The View were clearly not impressed that Donald Trump congratulated Vladimir Putin for winning his rigged election in Russia, especially since POTUS was specifically advised against doing that.
Sara Haines thought the United Kingdom will probably be insulted since Trump is cozying up to Putin again after the Russian government was connected to the recent chemical attack on British soil. Joy Behar agreed, saying it looks even more likely that Putin has blackmail on Trump, and the president is terrified of his Russian counterpart.
“He’s afraid of Putin. He’s afraid of Mueller. He’s afraid of Stormy. He’s afraid of everybody, this guy,” Behar said.
Meghan McCain argued that Trump’s predecessors didn’t have great track records on dealing with Putin either, but she did wonder how the Russia’s bad behavior became normalized on the international stage. Whoopi Goldberg also got a word in, invoking a rather gross metaphor to say that Trump is trapped in a complicated situation.
“Part of it also is that when you are knee deep in poop, you don’t want to seem like you’re wallowing in it…His fingerprints are all over Russia. So if you keep saying there’s nothing wrong, you have to figure out how you want to play this because this looks not good for you.”
As far as America’s past presidents were concerned, Goldberg thought that their calls to Putin were part of their diplomatic strategy.
