Landon Donovan the Dodgers fan gets last laugh on L.A. Galaxy teammate

Los Angeles is all about “the place to be.” For Hollywood celebs, it’s always important to be seen wherever the hottest ticket exists (see David Beckham, Kobe Bryant’s last game, Staples Center).

At this moment, the place to be in L.A. is just north of downtown in Chavez Ravine, which is where you’ll find Dodger Stadium and a Major League Baseball playoff that’s definitely not going according to script – at least not for the Chicago Cubs, the team that won an MLB-best 103 games in the regular season. On Tuesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Cubs 6-0 to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.

How is this relevant to the soccer world? Well, two members of the Los Angeles Galaxy – Landon Donovan and Mike Magee, both former Major League Soccer MVPs – scored some pretty sweet seats for Tuesday night’s game. Magee, the Illinois native, decided to document their night at the ballpark by capturing what he hoped would be a rare highlight for his beloved Cubbies when Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal faced a 3-2 count with one on and two out and Chicago trailing just 1-0 in the fourth inning.

As Donovan later described on his Instagram post, Magee hoped to shoot video of his teammate “being sad.” Instead, Magee’s plan backfired. Because this happened.

Grandal hit a two-run homer to give the Dodgers a 3-0 lead. But let’s give Magee credit for not deleting the video and allowing his embarrassment to be shared on social media.

Now, before you accuse Donovan of being a bandwagon L.A. fan, he is no stranger to Dodger Stadium. The Southern California native has thrown the ceremonial first pitch multiple times at Dodgers games and even played in the MLB All-Star Legends and Celebrity Softball Game last July in San Diego, hitting an inside-the-park home run. So he obviously loves the national pastime.

Next week, Donovan and Magee will try to produce more postseason memories for the Galaxy. The record, five-time MLS champions open the playoffs against a yet-to-be-determined knockout-round opponent, and if Bruce Arena’s club succeeds in winning a sixth MLS Cup crown, surely Donovan and Magee will have played their part, at least enough to post something on social media that both would be proud of.
