Sex assault suspect turned in by his mother, but accused Colorado man claims he surrendered all by himself

A 19-year-old sex assault suspect in Colorado was handed over to authorities last week by his mother, who “vowed to take care” of the situation involving her fugitive son after she found out about the charges.

Police in Fort Collins called it a “very unusual situation” after the mother drove from Colorado to Wyoming to pick up her son, who unbeknownst to him was being transported by his mom to a deputy waiting at the jail.

“Certainly, a very unusual situation,” Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith said in the 9News report this week. “What was unusual was when the deputy spoke with the suspect’s mother, and she found out about the charges, she vowed to take care of it.”

Elijah Jordan Jackson stands accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in February. He has been on the lam since then and an arrest warrant was issued by Fort Collins police on Oct. 24.

“Certainly, we do have family members cooperate, but to have mom go out of state and pick somebody up and bring them into the jail, first time in a quarter century I’ve seen it occur,” Smith said in the report.

Jackson denies the charges and said he was never in Wyoming while insisting that he turned himself over to authorities — emphasizing that his mom did not need to do it for him.

“People think that peace officers have a lot of authority and power,” Smith said. “But truth is moms have a heck of a lot more power than that.”
