Dental Savings Plans Versus Dental Insurance

Know Your Options for Saving Money on Dental Care

PLANTATION, Fla., Sept. 8, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With the cost of health insurance plan premiums set to rise as well as the trend towards higher deductibles/out of pocket costs, many people continue to look for ways to reduce their overall health care expenditures and save in the process.

One increasingly popular option is substituting or even supplementing dental insurance with a dental savings plan. A dental savings plan is an affordable alternative to dental insurance, which provides members with a savings of 10%-60% on their dental care needs. Depending on the procedure, this can result in large savings, especially for those who undergo more extensive procedures such as root canals, crowns and more.

And, although dental insurance reduces the cost of care as well, many policies, even some of the most expensive ones, limit coverage to $1,000-$1,500 annually. In fact, the annual caps on dental insurance have virtually remained the same for the past 40 years, according to MarketWatch. However, expenditures for dental services continue to rise, at an average rate of 5.5 percent annually. With the current cost of a dental crown ranging from $1,400 - $1,800, and a root canal at $1,200 - $1,800, it is far too easy to exhaust your annual dental insurance budget.

"We've found that many people who choose a dental savings plan either don't have insurance and need immediate treatment for expensive dental issues, or have dental needs that cost far more than the annual caps on insurance plans," said Bill Chase, Vice President of Marketing for :DentalPlans.

Unlike dental insurance, dental savings plans have no annual spending limit and are typically priced at about half the cost of dental insurance. Plan members can use their plans as often as they choose. Plus many of the dental savings plans include bonus benefits that provide savings on vision care, prescription medications and other health and wellness services and products, additionally easing the cost associated with high deductible health insurance plans.

And, dental savings plans do not require members to wait before they can save at the dentist – plans activate within three business days, so members can save immediately. Meanwhile, dental insurance companies typically enforce a 6-to-18 month waiting period before paying for major dental treatment such as crowns or root canals. And often times, such dental insurance policies will not pay to restore teeth that were missing before the policy was purchased or for work that was underway prior to the policy going into effect.

"Although several members join our network with an immediate need, many end up staying with us for the long haul to enjoy savings on all of their regular dental care needs," said Chase.
