VCU, George Washington Advance to Saturday's Semifinals

ORLANDO, Fla. – No. 1 seed VCU defeated No. 8 Fordham 4-0 in Thursday’s Quarterfinal matchup at the USTA National Campus. With the win, the Rams will face the winner of the No. 4 Duquesne/No.5 Richmond matchup Saturday at 1:00 pm, at the A-10 women’s Tennis Championship.

 

Marina Alcaide Bakkari and Sofia Sualehe got VCU off to a good start by dispatching Tatiana Grigoryan and Carolina Sa (6-2) on the No. 3 court. Anna Rasmussen and Kanako Yano wrapped up the doubles point by turning away Estelle Wong and Whitney Weisberg, 6-2.

 

Noumea Witmus picked up the second point of the evening for the Rams with her win over Gianna Insogna, 6-0, 6-2. Paola Exposito Diaz-Delgado only dropped two sets to Grigoryan (6-1, 6-1) in her victory. Clinching the match for VCU was Sualehe by turning away Weisberg, 6-1, 6-1.

ORLANDO, Fla.—No. 2 seed George Washington advanced to Saturday’s semifinals with a 4-0 win over No. 7 Dayton at the USTA National Campus on Thursday.

 

In doubles play the Colonials reeled off two-straight wins after Dayton’s Jade and Jackie Kawamoto defeated Marie-Louise Decamps and Diana Kussainova 6-1. Maria Siopacha and Meils Bayraktaroglu evened the score up at one apiece after their victory over Marlys Bridgham and Mattea Kilstofte. Sara Grubac and Julia Herlogsson clinched the point for George Washington by turning away Anna Delaney and Natialie Allen, 6-3.

 

In singles play, Bayraktaroglu was the first to score a point for GW by not dropping a set in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Kilstofte. Widening the lead for the Colonials was Decamps when she defeated Jackie Kawamoto, 6-2, 6-2. The match-clinching point was won by Kussainova with her 6-3, 6-2 win over Allen.

 

George Washington will face the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal matchup between No. 3 Davidson/No. 6 Massachusetts matchup on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
