Rain, ice and snow to impact travel through the weekend
Rain, ice, and snow will impact travel through the weekend as a strong storm system moves into the region.
Expect rain to move into the metro after 10 p.m. Friday. Farther west, a wintry mix including freezing rain could put a light icing over cities like York, Norfolk, and West Point. Temperatures will be hovering around freezing, so ice is possible but it is not a guarantee! A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for those areas through Saturday morning.
Temperatures will remain above freezing in the metro overnight as periods of heavy rain continue into Saturday. Isolated rumbles of thunder could create locally heavier downpours from Interstate 80 to the south! Rain totals could range from 1 to 2 inches across most of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa with isolated higher totals possible.
Cold air will start to work in Saturday night and change the rain over to a wintry mix and snow from west to east. On Sunday, light snow continues northwest of Omaha, but some snow showers could get into the metro during the day. There is a better chance for widespread light snow and accumulations in the Omaha metro Sunday night into Monday.
In addition to the snow, strong winds will cause blowing and drifting of snow in rural areas Sunday and Monday. These winds and blowing snow should keep roads slippery in central and northern Nebraska through the entire weekend. Some isolated snow covered roads are possible in the metro Sunday night into Monday morning.
