NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WVEC) — Parents are furious after one mother recorded a video showing a driver going around her child's stopped school bus. Some of the kids were still crossing the street.
Natasha Howe whipped out her phone and started recording the driver on Friday. She said she saw the driver inching closer and closer towards the front of the bus.
Howe was picking up her 6-year-old daughter from the bus stop on Winslow Drive in Newport News.
“For her to not stop, why,” Howe asked. “I wanted to stop her it made me so mad.”
Howe said what makes it even worse, this is not the first time this same driver decided to disobey the law and put kids' lives in danger.
“Anger, frustration, I felt like I needed to record to get the word out,” Howe said.
In 2017 there were 14 Summons issued and 2018 YTD 18 summons issued in Newport News.
Howe said she sent her video to police. Sadly, she's reminded of that tragic bus stop accident in Indiana last month, where a woman is accused of driving past a stopped school bus and killing three children.
“It's so unfortunate people are not thinking,” Howe said. “It's all about them, stop is stop.”
Howe said police told her they plan to send an officer out to patrol the area, which is the response she was hoping for. She hopes something is done sooner, rather than later, to prevent any more tragedies from happening.
This video was sent to NNPD as a Facebook message and they have forwarded that to the respective Captain.
