What’s up Next for Dakota Johnson? She’s Set to Star Alongside Florence Pugh in an Upcoming Movie
Breaking into mainstream consciousness with Fifty Shades of Grey in 2015, Dakota Johnson really shot to popularity after that. She’s appeared in several high-profile films since and also co-starred alongside other great actors. Recently, she co-starred with Shia LaBeouf in The Peanut Butter Falcon, which was an independent film, but the highest-grossing independent film of 2019, according to Variety. Johnson’s newest movie was The High Note, which came out after the pandemic started. Tracee Ellis Ross stars as a legendary pop star, and Johnson is her personal assistant who has grand ideas.
Johnson is, of course, not stopping there. And even with the delays due to COVID-19, she has some intriguing movies queued up next. Here are some that have been announced.
‘Our Friend’
Originally titled The Friend, Johnson stars in this film with Casey Affleck and Jason Segel. The premise revolves around a couple (Johnson and Affleck) who receive devastating medical news that rocks their small unit. Their best friend (played by Segel) drops his whole life to stay with them through this trying time.
The movie had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2019, and was bought for distribution by Roadside Attractions and Gravitas Ventures earlier this year. But it doesn’t have a release date yet, nor a trailer.
‘Nowhere Inn’
This is a rather interesting film; Nowhere Inn tells the story of singer St. Vincent and also stars St. Vincent. It’s not a documentary, but rather a hyperbolic telling of her behind-the-scenes life. Annie Clark (St. Vincent’s real name) stars alongside Carrie Brownstein, and Dakota Johnson plays herself. Except in this movie, her movie-self is Clark’s girlfriend. She’s a stand-in for Cara Delevingne or possibly Kristen Stewart, who Clark dated in the past.
While it premiered at Sundance this year, it, unfortunately, doesn’t have a home yet for streaming or distribution due to COVID-19. But one day, maybe fans will be able to see the cooky antics Johnson allegedly serves up.
‘The Lost Daughter’
One of two movies in pre-production for Johnson, The Lost Daughter also stars Olivia Colman and Peter Sarsgaard. Plus, it’s Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut. It’s based on the novel by Elena Ferrante and focuses on a college professor (Colman) who finds herself drawn to a young mother on a beach (Johnson). Colman’s character becomes entangled in her life, and the story moves from there.
‘Don’t Worry, Darling’
Lastly, probably the biggest project Johnson has coming up is Don’t Worry, Darling, with a majorly stacked cast. Not only is Johnson starring, but she’s alongside LaBeouf (a reunion after The Peanut Butter Falcon), Florence Pugh, and Chris Pine. It’ll be directed by Olivia Wilde and already has a lot of excitement around it.
Not much is known about the plot, but it’s “set in an isolated, utopian community in the 1950s California desert,” according to Variety.
