FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WRIC) — The Robert O. Norris Bridge, located over the Rappahannock River between Lancaster and Middlesex, will immediately have its vehicle weight limit reduced to 3 tons as VDOT inspectors check the bridge for possible damage.

The initial sign of a potential problem came when a VDOT construction inspector reportedly heard “an abnormal sound” that could indicate an issue with the bridge, according to a release from VDOT.

The steel truss bridge, built in 1957, had a major rehabilitation in 1996.

An inspection from VDOT to ensure the bridge’s elements are safe will begin Friday morning.

“Nothing is more important to us than the safety of the people crossing the bridge. We regret this inconvenience for drivers of heavier weight vehicles, who we know will have a significantly longer trip between the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula, said Marcie Parker, P.E., VDOT Fredericksburg District Administrator.

“However, we have a responsibility to protect the public and thoroughly investigate this concern out of an abundance of caution.”

Motorists who use Norris Bridge will be informed of the best alternate route with the help of message boards at decision points and detour signs along the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
