Veterans' Best Friend Prince Harry Set to Return to the U.S. to Support Service Members

Prince Harry is poised to come back to the U.S.!

Planning is underway for a stateside trek run by one his favorite charities, Walking with the Wounded, next year. Although the details are still in the early stages, a source tells PEOPLE that the upcoming walk — similar to the one he joined in the U.K in 2015 alongside American and British service members and veterans — is set to happen.

“We have a map but no lines on it and no route,” says the source.

It would be unusual for Harry not to be involved, as he is an active supporter of the charity, but the royal has not yet been approached formally yet — and the source discounts claims that his girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been invited.

Harry joined the Walking with the Wounded trek around the U.K. at a couple of points in 2015, telling PEOPLE at the time that “the support [for veterans] has been amazing.”

He has also headed to the South Pole with other intrepid adventurers in 2013 and trained with those who made the first expedition to the North Pole in 2011.

On Monday, Harry was out supporting military families and veterans who receive help from Big White Wall, an online service that offers remote advice and therapy to those struggling with a range of mental health issues. Harry, a British army veteran himself, has made mental health support for former service members one of his key causes.

Big White Wall helps 40,000 people around the U.K., including about 7,000 from the military and their families. James de Bathe, commercial director of the group, told Harry, 32, that Britain faced a shortage of similar services. “There aren’t enough trained counselors to deal with everything,” he said.

He appealed for funds from the Royal Foundation, the charitable trust set up by Harry, Prince William and Princess Kate to promote the causes they support.

Harry suggested that, as Big White Wall is part of the coalition of military charities in the Royal Foundation’s Heads Together mental health campaign, funding ought to be possible.

Meanwhile, Harry — who told PEOPLE last year about the “dark hole” of serving in combat before hosting his Invictus Games for wounded warriors in Orlando — said he was impressed by the support provided by the online community created by Big White Wall. “I love this. I might sign up for it myself,” he said.
