Here's my test, for what it's worth: If someone is gay, or is fooling around with somebody else's spouse, or keeps pornographic magazines inside his desk, that alone doesn't qualify as news. On the other hand, if a White House press secretary meets someone in a gay bar and helps him obtain press credentials he wouldn't have otherwise qualified for, that is a story...not because of the sexual aspect, but on account of the favoritism.

I find it also quite humorous given that my daughter's 16 year old friend was prevented from joining her highschool chorus that was singing at a Whitehouse event because she was a security risk. This is just SOP. When a scandal breaks that might potentially embarrass the GOP, the media either discovers some apples/oranges problem on the right and calls it a draw (Armstrong Williams, CPA corruption); or they feign outrage at some inconsequential part of the scandal to make the public ignore the important parts (RatherGate,GannonGate).

Bloggers didn't focus on the gay issue; it was pointed out simply as another example of GOP hypocrisy. GannonGate is the logical extension of the Williams incident and the fake Health Care news reports from last year. Given how hard it is to break into the White House press corps, the idea that they would give a pass to someone who was not a journalist but a paid mouthpiece (oops, I guess that's a bad choice of words) is beyond belief. Nor is it believable that they didn't bother to check out his name. Gannon failed to get a press pass to the Senate; shouldn't the White House have higher standards?

Lets not let this one go. Find out if he had a full pass, or whether he got day passes over and over. It shouldn't be too hard to find out who signed him in or okayed the pass or sponsered him. Drop the sexuality issue, except for the occasional bad pun. It would be nice to find out how many other *actual* journalists applied for passes and were turned down. I believe the GAO recently ruled that the faked Health Care reports were a violation of federal law - why isn't that story being repeated and tied into this one?

Keep it simple: a GOP operative posed as a journalist under an assumed name and was given a spot in the White House press corps, taking a place from someone who actually *is* a journalist. His only purpose seems to have been as a safe haven for Scotty and Georgie when the mean old journalists asked too many tough questions. His "questions" were just setups to allow the boys to repeat their talking points.

There's lots of dirt here, lets all keep digging.

The bad thing, though, is that this might be a smokescreen. It took attention away from the Iraqi election fraud, which was obvious if you were paying attention these last days. And now they are manipulating the situation to get their puppet in power. They are also trying to get those right wing judiciary appointments in unobstructed.
So maybe they are just tantalizing the insanely stupid public. I don't know. Maybe it doesn't matter, as long as we stay on top of it all.

None of you is more contemptuous of the Bush adminstration than I am. But it's important not to overreact to the Gannon thing by dragging in tawdry stuff about homosexuality and prostitution that isn't relevant.

If Gannon obtained press credentials by favoritism, that's a real issue. Why he was given favored treatment is gossip. If he was furnished with information about Valerie Plame, that's a bigger issue, because whoever provided the information is also guilty of a crime (so is Novak, for my money).

The danger here is that people will focus on Gannon's sexual habits, and Scott McClellan's, and maybe someone else's, and argue over which gay bar they frequented and whether Gannon was charging men for sex. I don't care. I care a whole lot about good reporters being excluded from press briefings while unqualified people are given their places. I care even more about the laws of the country being enforced without regard for politics.

What gets me is that the bloggers are asking for a far more reasonable approach here. I mean Gannon is linked to the Valerie Plame incident and he is not a reporter. He is the only one I would require to testify.

The real press (bloggers included) need protection at times. But fakers like Gannon, who is just a part of the propaganda arm, when they are equally involved should be the first to be required to talk if anyone is.

They reason like teenagers who live at home, use the car without paying for the gas, eat the meals without buying groceries, refuse to follow the rules, and then blame their parents when the arguments start about responsibility. It's taking the easy way out all the time. With their jobs (e.g. the MSM, with their lives). That's why God is so convenient. He's the Daddy who going to give you everything you want or think you need, if you tell him you love him and go to church. Like wishes granted by the genie in the bottle. The fundamentalist preachers further relieve the Repubs. of responsibility by telling them what God thinks and says, and what Repubs. should believe and do. They are all just a big bunch of irresponsible children. How do you handle these children in adult bodies? How do you keep them from driving the bus into the ditch? They think they know what they are doing, and don't care if they don't. We are all on that damn bus.

Thanks for the reply. Since I am an openly gay person I don't really talk much to married men who are in the closet. I have a theory, which others agree with me, that closeted, mostly married, gay men have their own culture. I mean, openly men go to gay bars and join the local gay baseball team while closeted gay men pay prostitutes $200 an hour (i.e. Gannon).

I wish the Dems do investigate the sexual component of this story because it just shows the hipocracy of the right wings', in my opinion unnatural, hatred for sex. My theory is that if you repress something natural like sex and love, that it comes out in unhealthy and sometimes sick and disfunctional ways. I think the closeted gay marrieds are a different creature altogether... deceptive, probably paranoid, and maybe some excessive cruelty in that they are implicating others (children) into their drama. They may also get a thrill out of keeping it a taboo and making it illicit behavior. This translates into all kinds of behaviors that would seem aberrant and distasteful to most.
I've worked with gay men all my life, and they seem natural and normal to me. 10%, if not more, of the population has always been homosexual. It occurs in the animal kingdom as well.
But these other types, I believe are not the norm, and probably have psychological faulty wiring. A thrill seeking desire that is harmful to others.

So, you're an "openly man"? Just teasing. I absolutely agree with your theory. It ain't natural to repress any feelings. I think that closeted gay marrieds are a perfect example and I feel very sorry for them. How unhappy their lives must be, all the while pretending to be something that they are not.

All this talk makes me miss my best buddy, whom I lost to AIDS 7 years ago. We both grew up in the same small town and I watched him desperately try to push down his feelings and date girls because that was what was expected of him. When he graduated the first thing he did was move to the city and BLOSSOMED! He found a whole community and just thrived. Unfortunately, it was in the mid-70's, before everyone knew about AIDS. Also unfortunately most of the community was fairly promiscuous, I believe from too many years of trying to be something they weren't and the sheer relief of no longer pretending. I remember when he told me that he was gay (not that I hadn't noticed, we were after all, best buddies). He was very nervous, kept fidgeting and finally couldn't tell me. He went into the bedroom and came out with a copy of Time magazine and it had something about the Gay Revolution on the cover. I looked at it, looked at him and said, "That's it?! For God's sakes I thought you were going to tell me you were dying or something." That entire community is now dead.
Gee, I haven't thought about him for awhile. We had so much fun together. I miss him.

regarding G's comment #106 --- I doubt very strongly that this story could be a diversion from the Gannon sex scandal, for several reasons, the most compelling being:

[1] The information in the article I linked to is now four days old. If it were a Republican plant, it would have been all over the major media three days ago.

[2] The idea of a gay male whore in the press room is trivial compared to idea that the entire election was simply a puppet show, with both puppets playing from the same script. I could consider the notion that a sex scandal was being used as a diversion from something much more important, but not the other way around.

It's tempting to think of every single thing that goes wrong for the Republicans as a setup, a Rovian master-plan, a look-over-there moment to divert us from something they don't want us to notice. But it doesn't make any sense. At least not to me. I may be wrong, and I've been wrong before, but I really don't buy this particular conspiracy theory.

Creating conspiracy theories is fun, but it's also counterproductive. The mainstream media ignored legitimate issues of election fraud, blaming conspiracy theorists for raising them and taking themselves off the hook for not doing their jobs.

Trying to guess how many people in Washington slept with Gannon will reinforce the media bias against the blogosphere. Can't we concentrate on the real issue...unqualified reporters with access to the White House who somehow obtain classified information about a C.I.A. operative? That's a crime!

Yes, the right wing and its allies are hypocrites. But being hypocritical isn't a crime. Rove can handle that stuff, but he can't rewrite laws. So please, let's stick to what matters.

There is a lot of wheeling and dealing among these politicians, and the PR firms regularly work for both parties. They probably enjoy the competition.
It's a huge game, and winning is always important, so collusion is doubtful.

Regarding the concession, I think Kerry assessed the situation and recognized immediately the impossibility of uncovering the fraud in time to turn the election. He didn't want to waste any energy on such a useless pursuit. "Counting all the votes" was also useless. He knew.
You cannot make any accusations of fraud without a rock bottom case, and that takes time. Plus the impossibility of getting any record of the machines. So they would have to depend on whistle blowers. Again luck and more time.

He made that decision knowing it was the right thing to do and that it would be very unpopular with his supporters. Now he is working on election reform. I think he thought this would be the most effective way to go.

Like or dislike Kerry, if you study his personality, I think you would see that it is not in his nature to play these sordid games with these Republicans. I'm sure that if he were forced to throw an election, he NEVER would have run. Just not his style.

Although Kerry is a seasoned Washington politician with corporate connections, he battles with spirituality and morality, and wants to be known as a man of dignity. He wants to be respected. they can't find any dirt on him, so they resorted to the tactics you saw in the campaign. He has a deeply ingrained sense of responsibility, taught to him early on as a member of the noblesse oblige. He feels a calling to do something good for his country. A tall order, for sure.

WP and Robert - NOT TO MENTION the obvious fact that scandal is obvious. For heaven's sake, who cares? I didn't peek at the unexpurgated photos of the Gannon bod, pleading boredom and the overexposure of Playgirl and Burt Reynolds in the dark ages. I.e. scandal and human anatomy is boring; but executive malfeasance is an issue that is being sidelined by the diversion - and THAT is interesting. Look at the "terror alert" headlines, at least 3 of 'em, today.

Another - and tangential - thing: where does all this "guilt" come from? Why is interest in and attraction to the human body considered illicit and "wrong" and vaguely disgusting? Why is this interest and attraction associated with crime? Because dear little American toddlers have been instructed from their nursery days that their physical selves are dirty. "Gannon" sites would not exist, exploitative as they are, if this horribly warped, trained mindset did not exist. We'd be free of a whole other category of human exploitation.

When I was in graduate school, a bunch of us spent Thanksgiving at an Appalachian farm in West Va., without any of the so-called amenities. One of our number was scared stiff of her biological self. So, when she was "visiting" the outhouse, we all stripped, arrayed ourselves picturesquely around the house, and awaited her return. She was stunned, all right, but she ended up collapsing in hysterical laughter, conceding that we had had a point all along.

What an absolutely fantastic story! You are so creative.

The question of sexual guilt is fascinating and could be discussed endlessly. It is so deep and I think is the root of many, many of our problems, war included, as we have discussed here before.

I don't know where it originated, but I do know that on the islands of Samoa in the South Pacific, the people are relatively free of this guilt. They are encouraged to play and explore their sexuality from very early on. But, of course, this is rare.

One thing we are afraid of is the power of our sexuality, and the power of pleasure. I don't know if religion came first, or the fear and guilt, but it appears that most religions teach shame around the issue. They teach pain and suffering and redemption, and pleasure is sinful. Just look at this tragic world we live in that lusts after pain and blood. That's why I quit watching television. The blood lust was unbearable for me.

We discover immediately in life what exqusite pleasure the sex organs bring, but when we touch them too much, we are reprimanded. Then we are forced not to to it in public, and on and on it goes until it becomes taboo. And we are ashamed of them. They always have to be covered.
All the repression leads to more desire and the whole thing malfunctions and turns into aberrant behavior.

It's all so complicated, and there is a lot more to it. I'd love to get everyone's ideas.

One thing that has happened in this society is the perversion of the natural function of the female breast. It has become a weapon, really, that women take knifes to and alter, so as to make them more attractive as women. And then comes the huge breast cancer rate that further indicates malfunction. The breast was meant to be a source of nourishment and comfort, and I think the transforming of this into a sex tool has damaged our society and intimidated men, rather than make them feel safe at the breast, as they should.
Not all cultures do this, though. They have other hangups.

And we use sex as a sales pitch. Kind off the real purpose, I would say.
We also use as a bartering tool, for economic gain.
We say it's great. Then we say it's bad, but we denigrate those who choose not to partake.

Here, if the MSM follows it, is where Rove will be damaged. There has already been speculation that he was involved in the Valerie Plame incident.

Gannon/Guckert, if the special prosecutor follows it as some dems have demanded, may spill some beans here that removes some of the teflon from Roves hiney.

Regarding Gannon/Gucky (love that Peggy!), checked out Justin Raimondo's article at Antiwar.com. In it he links an interesting discussion between Gucky and another poster who is challenging him at freeperland, regarding his trouble with the independant prosecutor investigating the Plame leak. It's very tame and doesn't include the usual ignorant flaming of the left, so it's safe to go there. I really think this story goes a lot deeper than just sex and press passes.

All of the above is fascinating - It appears to me that Gannon Guckie came to the attention of "whoever" in the W.H. for his gay escort services, prior to becoming a convenient plant for the W.H. press briefings, since he had no prior "journalism" experience. I felt a bit uncomfortable (kinda like when you're in the room when a couple who are your friends get into a little argument), but I basically ignored it because I knew it wouldn't turn into a big fight - that kind of behavior would be out of character, at least in here, for all four of you, UNLESS some freeper creeper got in and did it for meanness, not just mischief.

How do I know that? Because I don't have body language to rely on in here (which is my number one method of communication and survival in r/t), so I have to sit on the sidelines and study actions and reactions.

I must have missed the flashing light episode, whatever it was, and I'm really not interested in details of it, so if there was some problem before, it's good to see that it's resolved. It is resolved right?

Yeah Supersoling and KestrelBrighteyes, the point I was trying to make on the hog-lite thingy is that news organizations, even blogs, have egos, feelings, and game playing. And when there is trouble that challenges our notions we "don't want to hear it". I say plow thru that and blog on.

The MSM has been destroyed by it. A little inoculation stops disease. We need to be aware that the news is not a commodity, but rather a sacred duty of journalists. Bloggers are the real journalists these days so we work together cause we owe the public the truth. Brad says "be the media" and "make the truth fun".

I hope it was none of the above. Personally, I wasn't trying to get anybody back for anything [and I can't imagine what] ... nor was I hoping to make anyone pout or gloat. I was just thinking that since the flashing light is the most powerful visual tool Brad has, and since this is his blog, he should probably be the only one who uses it.

I thought Cheryl (#101) was kidding, and clearly the comment to which Dredd had attached the light (#97) was intended as a joke, so I never imagined that anyone would be offended by my removing the light. Okay, I still think the strength of uncovering all of this more quickly is in "turning" Gannon/Guckert (why do I have this overwhelming desire to refer to him as "the Gucky puppy"? Odd).

If you read his interviews, he's NOT the brightest bulb in the string by any means. And you can bet, the stress of all of this, the relentlessness of reporters and bloggers, will get to him eventually, if it hasn't already, and he will crack. If the investigations get really close to the top, he has to realize that he is expendable - or does he actually think he'll be protected in all of this? It would be nice if someone is there to offer him shelter from the storm if only he will come up with names. He's wary now, so it would be more easily taken if he were advised by an already trusted friend. Is there anyone like that who cares enough about him to try and save him - a companion, a friend?

Self-preservation is one hell of a motivation, for all concerned. He should be very, very afraid right now.

Just thinking out loud here more than anything, but maybe it'll trigger something.
