Two adults and a child are dead after a “targeted” shooting on Route 300 early Sunday morning, Town of Newburgh Supervisor Gil Piaquadio confirmed Sunday afternoon.

Town police stated a man and a woman, identified as the mother and father in their late 20s, died in the shooting, as well as their 9-year-old son, at around 8 a.m. at 1751 Route 300 in the Chadwick Lake area of the Town of Newburgh. The couple’s 3-year-old son was taken to Westchester in Valhalla with serious injuries.

A fifth person, a child, may have been home at the time of the shooting but was uninjured, police said.

“We feel quite sure the shooter knew he wanted to be at that house and it was not just a pick a house at random,” Piaquadio said early Sunday afternoon.

Town of Newburgh police block off Route 300 at Chapel Road. It was closed for hours on Sunday as police investigated an early morning shooting that left a mother, father and their 9-year-old son dead and 3-year-old son seriously injured.

The investigation is still in its early stages and a,“person of interest” is being interviewed, police said.

“There is no additional threat to the public from this incident,” police said.

Route 300, between Route 32 and Chapel Road, was closed through the evening as the investigation continued.

State police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office are involved in the investigation.

An impromptu press conference was held at the corner of Routes 32 and 300 by Town of Newburgh Police Chief Bruce Campbell and Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler late Sunday afternoon.

Campbell said police had been to the single-family home “on occasion” for separate incidents, but nothing recently. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots early Sunday morning.

Police are conducting searches “at several locations” and they are talking to “several people” in connection with the incident, but they are not looking for anyone else at this time, Campbell said.

No charges were filed as of Sunday afternoon.

The police department headquarters on Gardnertown Road was hectic with activity Sunday, as was either ends of the closed off portion of Route 300.

Helicopters flew overhead as local residents and those passing through stopped, inquiring about what was happening down the road. Most of them shook their head with disbelief when they heard the news.
