It seems like mixed martial arts (MMA) can’t escape superfight talks involving undefeated boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr.
After “Money” made easy work of UFC superstar Conor McGregor last year in a massive boxing match, the on-and-off retired Mayweather is yet again being mentioned alongside some of MMA’s best.
This time around, Mayweather has dialed in on current UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov, who defeated McGregor via fourth-round submission at UFC 229 back in October. Khabib, who is 27-0 in MMA competition, has already called out Mayweather to a matchup of undefeated kings.
While UFC president Dana White assured combat fans that a Mayweather vs. Khabib superfight wouldn’t happen unless it was inside of the Octagon, “Money” reminded us all why he should be calling the shots in a recent interview with TMZ Sports.
“They came to me talking about the Khabib fight,” said Mayweather. “Khabib called me out, I didn’t call Khabib out. They said it has to happen in the octagon and I said, ‘You just tell me where Khabib has made nine figures before in the octagon. If he hasn’t made nine figures, he’s not the A side. I’m the A side, so if you guys want the fight to happen, you must come my way. My way, my rules.”
Sound familiar? It should. Mayweather kept claiming he was the “A side” leading up to his boxing superfight with McGregor.
Considering Khabib is less of a striker than “Notorious,” it probably wouldn’t bode well for the Russian superstar to step inside of the boxing ring with Mayweather. Khabib may think he has a shot, but even teammate Daniel Cormier believes “Eagle” would get his wings clipped.
That said, we live in a time when money talks. If enough money is on the table for UFC, Team Mayweather, and Team Khabib, another crossover superfight between Mayweather and a UFC champion could come to fruition. That is if all parties adhere to Mayweather’s rules and regulations.
“Has to [be boxing],” Mayweather reiterated. “My way, my rules. I’m Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. Even if it don’t happen, I’m comfortable. I’ve got a great life. Houses all over L.A. I’m retired and I’m still living a great life.”
