Residents of a Burlington apartment complex say they are scared to leave their house, after a vicious dog attack.

"I was just sitting down, ready to eat some apple sauce and the dog came out of nowhere," said Audra Gorton, a resident of the Burlington Housing Authority.

Gorton says she was sitting at her kitchen table Saturday night when she heard screams coming from the street. "I happen to see them roll across into the pavement," said Gorton.

The mother of two says she was shocked to see a young girl in the middle of Maple street getting attacked by a dog.

"I saw my hand in it's mouth and I got really scared," said Hawa Awyle, 12, a resident of the Burlington Housing Authority.

Gorton says she ran out of her house to help. "I screamed at the top of my lungs," said Gorton. "The dog then put his attention on me."

She was taken to the hospital for a bite to thigh. She says the attack has affected her physically and mentally.

"It has definitely put a damper our lives a little bit," said Gorton.

Awyle is also recovering from the attack. She had a bandage on her right wrist.

Awley and Gorton say this is not the first time the dog has been aggressive.

"Now it's kind of traumatizing knowing that this dog does that to people," said Awyle.

"There are 17 families in here. Many of us have children under the age of five. We are all freaked out. That dog is vicious," said Gorton.

The Burlington Police Department is investigating the attack.
