CARBONDALE • Althoff’s boys golf team earned a state tournament berth for the fourth time in five seasons Monday by finishing second in the Class 2A Carbondale Sectional at Hickory Ridge Golf Course.
The Crusaders turned in a team score of 304, finishing behind only Charleston’s 297 and ahead of third-place Benton’s 306. The top three teams qualified to play in the Class 2A state tournament Friday and Saturday at Illinois Sate’s Weibring Golf Club in Normal, along with the top 10 individuals from non-qualifying teams.
Avery Irwin’s 72 tied for the low round of the sectional to lead Althoff, with Jack Bruening’s 73 also leading the charge. Also contributing to Althoff’s team score was Kaleb Laramore’s 77 and George Orlet’s 82.
Advancing individually to state were Alton Marquette’s Sam Cogan (75), Waterloo’s Tre Wahling (76) and Mater Dei’s Grant Goebel (76).

Class 3A Edwardsville Sectional • The host Tigers fell two shots short of advancing to the Class 3A state tournament for a fourth consecutive season.
Edwardsville turned in a team score of 332 at Sunset Hills Country Club, two strokes behind Lockport for the third and final team qualifying berth to state. The top three teams advanced to play Friday and Saturday at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in Bloomington along with the top 10 individuals from non-qualifying teams.
O’Fallon, coming off a regional team title, also fell short by finishing ninth in the team standings with a 347. No area individual advanced to state, either.
Homewood Flossmoor won the team title with a 317 behind medalist Hayden Henry’s 74.
