One of Hollywood's biggest nights of the season is finally upon us: The 71st Primetime Emmy Awards. Stars from some of the some of the hottest shows on television will gather together at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles to celebrate a year of impeccable TV and visual storytelling on September 22. The program will air on Fox for the fourth consecutive year.
While there are a quite a few repeat players nominated at the 2019 Emmys, there will be some noticeable differences at the star studded event this year, primarily in regards to the show's host. Taking a page out of the Academy Awards playbook, the Emmys will not have one specific host but rather give an onslaught of actors, directors and showrunners time on the stage. Movie buffs may recall the Oscars following a similar format during the awards show in February after Kevin Hart abandoned the position following backlash over homophobic comments he made several years ago.
Instead of having a host, a number of celebrities have been enlisted to highlight nominees and present Emmy awards. The first set of presenters were revealed on Wednesday, according to a Deadline report. Stars expected to hand out awards include Michael Douglas, Viola Davis, Zendaya, Angela Bassett and Peter Krause, Stephen Colbert, Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers, Billy Porter and Naomi Watts.
Meanwhile, several Game of Thrones cast members, including Alfie Allen, Gwendoline Christie, Emilia Clarke, Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Carice van Houten, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Maisie Williams will present.
Fox opted out of choosing a host for the Emmys in an effort to spend more time honoring nominated shows—particularly ones like nominees GOT and Veep, which aired their final seasons this year—and the people involved. "Our job is to assess as to how to elevate the program in the year that we have it. If you have a host and an opening, that's 15 or 20 minutes you can't have to salute the shows," Charlie Collier, Fox Entertainment CEO, told Deadline.
The ceremony won't just be actors passing out gold statues. Speaking with Entertainment Weekly in August, Collier promised the 71st awards show would still feature a ton of entertainment.
"We've had a lot of names on the board but the conclusion was reached this year that we're highlighting so many shows going away that it was a better use of the time," he said. "There will be entertainment. There will be an opening number. If you look at the trade-offs in a show like the Emmys, so often its a trade-off between the opening acts and using the time elsewhere. There will be many surprises. It will be entertaining."
