Greenslade Taylor Hunt will donate from their commission to charity £1 from every dairy cow, store and stirk, 50p from every calf and 25p from sheep and pigs sold. The charity will be a fund to set up a Health room here at the market, to give farmers the opportunity to visit a NHS nurse on Saturdays as necessary. Farmers are not good at going to the doctor, so the health room will provide a convenient alternative.

Dairy Cattle (73): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a super January weekly entry saw a bright trade from start to finish for almost 70 milkers. Only the frail young heifers met resistence from a ringfull of potential purchasers from Carmarthen to Cornwall. Vendors from Norfolk, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire as well as Devon and Somerset generally went home satisfied as prices rose to £1980 for a pedigree home bred heifer from Mr A & Mrs W Vigus. Others to £1940 £1900 and £1780 all from Mr A & Mrs JE Fewings. £1880 £1780 and £1700 Snook Ltd. £1710 Ham Farm Partners; £1700 Mr RH Webb; £1660 Messrs JW Read & Son, Norfolk and Mr MC Powell.

Pigs (191): Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very good entry of quality pigs forward, with much of the entry made up of fat pigs. Trade for the fat a little easier compared to the pre Christmas trade in line with other centres.

Cull Sows (18) A good entry sold to a level trade. Top price of £113 and £100 from David Green. Others £99 from Messrs LE Miller & Son and £96 from Mr S Whitaker.

Weaners (27) Small entry sold to a good trade as weaners are now being sought after the holiday period. Top price £29 from Mr R Ingram and Tom Palmer. Others to £22 from Mr D Gerring.

Forward Stores (118) Another quality entry however sold to a slightly easier trade as expected for the early New Year.

UTM (63) & OTM Prime Cattle (7): Auctioneers Comments: Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a medium entry of 63 prime cattle of generally good Quality met a cracking trade. When there is downward pressure on deadweight prices, cattle are worth more alive than dead.

Top was 219.5ppk for a clean (no waste) lean and good confirmation Limousin steer from Messrs AJ Hepper & Son, Blue Anchor, who sold others similar from a super run at 209.5 twice, 208.5, 207.5 twice, 206.5, 204.5, 203.5, 202.5 and 200.5ppk all Limousins and 204.5ppk for a Blue and 204.5 and 200.5ppk again for Blondes. A super Charolais with a great top from Messrs L & A Maddock & Co, Wiveliscombe hit 213.5ppk. Other better type steers at 200.5ppk, Limousin, Mr RW Darby, Middlezoy and 200.5ppk again for another Limousin from Mrs MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter.

Prices of note were 198.5ppk for a 660kg Angus steer, £1310.10 and 168.5ppk for a 696kg Holstien Friesian Steer, £1172.76 both from David Curtis.

Steers sold to an excellent £1466.50 for a Limousin from Messrs AJ Hepper & Son, who sold other steers at £1437.59 (Blonde) £1426.54 (Limousin) and £1407.51 (Limousin). £1431.57 was received by the Trustees of J Badman, Ashcott for a Limousin. £1409.10 was achieved by Messrs L & A Maddock & Co with a Charolais.

Heifers also in very keen demand to 208.5ppk for a shapely, very well fleshed Simmental from Mr R & Mrs F Barrow & Son, Over Stowey, which went to a Puriton butcher. Smart heifers from Messrs JF Walker & Partners, North Petherton rose to 208.5 and 199.5ppk and sold to Gloucester and Taunton butchers. Similarly smart Butcher’s type Limousin heifers from Mr RW Fry, Long Sutton hip 203.5 and 196.5ppk and sold to Gloucester. A well fleshed Blonde from Mrs MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter sold to a Weston Super Mare butcher at 199.5ppk. Good Limousin heifers from Mr RJ, Mrs HA & Mr MR Popham, Highbridge sold to a Bristol butcher at 195.5ppk twice, who also sold another at 190.5ppk. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very “cold” show of cows, when meat types wre in short supply, met an excellent trade for all.

Sucklers were in very short supply and topped at 157.5ppk for a good shape, well fleshed Charolais from Mr DG & Mrs RH Matravers, Pitminster. Another better type Charolais, this time from Messrs EJ Collins & Son, Chard met a call of 144.5ppk. A leaner, good feeding type Charolais, this time from Mr TJ Richards, Congrebury rose to 139.5ppk. Native sucklers peaked at 134.5ppk for a Galloway from Mr RF Moore, Hinton Hill.

Sucklers sold to £1199.22 for a Simmental from Messrs NJ Cooke & Co, Chilthorne Domer. Charolais at £1135.58 from Mr DG & Mrs RH Matravers.
