Warning: This article contains spoilers for the season four midseason finale of How To Get Away with Murder 'Live, Live, Live'

It was the midseason finale of How to Get Away with Murder this week, and we think it's safe to say no one was quite expecting one of the most horrific scenes in television history to go down in the show's closing moments.

But it did. And we reckon it could rival the notorious gory scenes of Game of Thrones.

'Live, Live, Live' saw the six-months-pregnant Laurel (Karla Souza) get trapped in an elevator – and we absolutely couldn't handle what came next.

But here's what went down if you missed it.

The sequence began with Annalise (Viola Davis) calling Laurel and telling her to come over to the hotel where she's staying, after learning from Connor that it was Laurel's dad who killed Wes (or at least, one of his associates).

Laurel does so, but on her way up to Annalise's room notices she's bleeding quite profusely. Seconds later, the rickety old elevator gets stuck, trapping the heavily-bleeding Laurel inside.

Hearing her cries, Annalise prises open the elevator door and spots Laurel, who by this time is passed out on the floor of the elevator.

Annalise is then horrified to discover she can't open the elevator grate, meaning Laurel is trapped there unconscious.

The concept alone is terrifying – a severely bleeding pregnant woman passed out in a broken lift.

But the situation then snowballs from your standard nightmare into your legitimate living hell, when Annalise discovers Laurel has already given birth – and that her premature baby is lying in a pool of blood near the now unconscious Laurel.

Oh, and it's not actually breathing.

Following the petrifying discovery, Annalise calls the emergency services and talks to an operator, who tells her she has to get the baby out of the elevator.

Under medical guidance (sidenote: major props to the operator for knowing exactly how to handle such an unlikely scenario), Annalise cuts Laurel's umbilical chord with her phone charger lead (yes, really) and drags the baby through the elevator grate, before giving it CPR with her finger.

Thankfully, we hear the baby cry as the credits roll, indicating Laurel's premature (and by this time, severely manhandled) baby has survived against all the odds.

But it doesn't mean we're not traumatised by the experience, and it seems executive producer Pete Nowalk feels the same.

"I was shocked by what I saw too," he told The Hollywood Reporter.

"I still am every time I see it and I know it's really uncomfortable for people, but I found that any time I'm shocked I'm like, 'Okay, I want more of this.'"

Phew.

We don't know about Annalise, but we definitely need a drink after watching that.

How to Get Away with Murder returns to ABC on January 18.
