Diamond Jubilee of Dhakai cinema
Bangalee Shamagro Museum is set to hold a special programme today, marking the diamond jubilee (60 years) of Dhaka's cinema industry. On August 3, 1956, the first full length 'talkie' film from Dhaka was released: Abdul Jabbar's “Mukh O Mukhosh”.
Information Minister Hasanul Haque Inu will attend the event as chief guest, at the Nalinikanta Bhattashali gallery of the Bangladesh National Museum at 6pm. Dhaka University Vice Chancellor AAMS Arefin Sidique will also be present as special guest, while the programme will be presided over by professor Emeritus Anisuzzaman.
Advocate Sultana Kamal will deliver the welcome address, while Anupom Hayat will present a keynote on “60 years of Dhakai Cinema: expectations and achievements”. Filmmaker Mashihuddin Shaker will also pay tribute to eminent film personality M Abdus Samad (marking his death anniversary today).
A collage of remarkable sequences from films of over the last 60 years will be o display next, followed by an exhibition of rare memorabilia – including movie camera, film stills, posters and newspaper clippings. Prominent film stars of the yesteryears Kabori and Faruque will also speak on the occasion.
The event will close with screenings of excerpts of two landmark films: Zahir Raihan's incomplete 1970 project “Let There Be Light” and Alamgir Kabir's Liberation War drama “Hangor Nodi Grenade”.
