In a remarkable scene captured on surveillance video, the clerk runs at full speed towards the would-be robbers with his sword ahead of him and hits one machete with his blade.

Panicked, the two teens flee and the clerk chases them down the street.

According to police, everything they had picked up, including a set of t-shirts, was found strewn across the street after they fled.

The clerk's brother M.C. Hydare, who was in the store at the time, told WPXI: 'When he hit the sword that the dude had in his hand - my brother hit the sword - he ran away.

'I just want to give a message to them: don’t try this. You can have money in a better way. Not this.

Pittsburgh police are investigating the incident - which comes four years after the city reported an issue with 'sword-wielding ninjas'.

Eleven cars were smashed and a man was stabbed in the hand by a group of so-called ninjas in South Union Township, Pittsburgh, in 2011.

Police did not track down the assailants.
