Aldi unveils new posh Italian food line to rival Waitrose and Sainsbury’s – but at almost HALF the price

ALDI appears to be on a mission to out-posh its rivals with its extensive range of low-cost upmarket food.

Its latest attempt is a selection of Italian gourmet food which includes a copycat version of  toff tipple San Pellegrino.

A bottle of Aldi's No Added Sugar Italian Style Soda in blood orange, orange, lemon and mint costs 79p each - the same price of a can San Pellegrino.

While its Balsamic vinegar aged in wooden barrels for a minimum of three years is 56 percent cheaper than Waitrose’s 1 Aceto Balsamico Di Modena which cost £11.25.

Other items include Toscano Extra Virgin Olive Oil, £5.99, Bread Oven Sticks at 99p and Specially Selected Bronze Die Tagliatelle at 85p.

But not everything is cheaper than its rivals, as its Specially Selected Buffalo Mozzarella is 99p - around the same price as Waitrose and Sainsbury's.

Annoyingly, Aldi doesn't let you shop online so you'll have to head to your local store to pick up the treats.

Today it was revealed that Lidl has overtaken Waitrose to become the UK's seventh largest supermarket as shoppers cope with inflation by turning to the discounters, figures show.

The German retailer increased its market share to a record high of 5.2 percent over the 12 weeks to August 13, according to Kantar Worldpanel, as 10 million households visited its expanding network of stores.

It increased sales by 18.9 percent overall, with alcohol and fresh produce performing particularly well.

Aldi was not far behind with sales growth of 17.2 percent, attracting 1.1 million more shoppers than this time last year and increasing market share to 7 percent.

The five ways you can save on your grocery shop

  1. COMPARE food prices online. As with any purchase you’re about to make, you should always compare retailers to see who’s offering the best prices.
  2. Use discount codes. It pays to check sites like MoneySavingExpert and VoucherCloud to nab supermarket discounts and voucher codes. A simple search online could help you save £10 or £20 off an online order.
  3. Buy own-brand goods. Unbranded goods are significantly cheaper than their branded counterparts, so opting to buy the former could cut your bill down considerably.
  4. Use cashback websites. You can earn cashback each time you make a grocery order online, giving you extra savings on your weekly shop.
  5. Find yellow sticker bargains. Reduced items with the magic yellow sticker can be up to 75 per cent cheaper than the retail price, and if you have a big freezer then its the perfect way to stock up on the best brands for less.

The discounters' success coincides with like-for-like grocery inflation increasing slightly to 3.3 percent after holding steady at 3.2 percent for the past two months.

It comes as Aldi launched a Great British Bake Off inspired baking range, which includes a stand mixer that is SIX times cheaper than a Kitchen Aid.
