OWENSBORO, KY (WFIE) - Thousands turned out to fireworks celebrations around the Tri-State.

There were people as far as you can see at Smothers Park.

The popular Nashville band 12 South performed for hours in the heat and people like Jeremy Johnson came all the way from Butler County, Kentucky.

"This is my first year here. We're really enjoying the scenery. The park is beautiful; the music is great. The food has been awesome. We're having a good time," Johnson said.

Independence Day for this city draws in 15-to-20 thousand folks every year.

Attendance has skyrocketed since crews built Smother's Park and the Convention Center four years ago.

Owensboro Police and state police troopers tell us they're out on the roads making sure everyone gets home safe.
