Former Rangers kid Kal Naismith on why Josh Windass is becoming a key player under Graeme Murty

Windass - who played with Naismith at Accrington Stanley - has been in fine form since Graeme Murty replaced Pedro Caixinha at Ibrox earlier this season

THE last time Rangers went to the Highlands he scored the winner with his first goal for the club.

Now Kal Naismith is backing old mate Josh Windass to be a Highland hero for his former club this time around.

Kid Naismith got the only goal when Rangers — then in the Third Division — beat Forres Mechanics in September 2012.

The striker, now at League One Portsmouth, is adamant that Gers’ attitude will be more important than their ability when they face Fraserburgh on Sunday.

He said: “It will be about how Rangers approach the game as much as anything.

“A few of the players have been down the divisions and will know what to expect.

“They’ll be aware every team sees playing Rangers as a cup final. Fraserburgh will be no different.

“Rangers will have to go up there with the right attitude, probably even more than their ability.

“Rangers are better technically, they are better athletes and better players. If they don’t apply themselves the right way, anything can happen.

“I keep in touch with a few Rangers guys, like Josh Windass.

“I played with Josh at Accrington, when he was a young player coming through. I think he has probably been Rangers’ best player this season.

“I’ve got pals who are Rangers supporters and they maybe weren’t sure about him at the start. But I told them: ‘Trust me, he’s going to be a massive player for Rangers.’

“I didn’t have any doubts because of the kind of character he has. He’s got that wee bit of arrogance you need at a big club.

“It won’t bother him what fans are saying, what pundits are saying, even what the manager’s saying about him.

“I’m also glad Andy Halliday is back at Rangers. He loves the club and understands what it means to play for them. Fraserburgh will be the sort of game guys like him should play in.

“Scoring against Forres is a great memory for me because it was my first Rangers goal.

“It was a horrible game but fair play to Forres, they made it horrible and it was up to us to impose ourselves on them.”

Naismith is enjoying life at Pompey.

He added: “It’s a massive club and this is a lovely part of the world so I’m settled.

“I’m out of contract at the end of the season but I’m aiming to use the next few months to help us push for promotion and get a new deal.”
