Rock the Garden has been pushed back once again.

The Walker Art Center and 89.3 The Current announced Wednesday that the annual outdoor concert will not take place in 2021 after being postponed this year due to the pandemic.

“This is a very difficult decision for both organizations. Although it may seem premature, the bulk of the planning, including booking bands on tour and securing permits, needs to be completed by the New Year,” said Walker executive director Mary Ceruti in a news release. “It is not feasible to do this work given the current situation with COVID-19. We are disappointed to not be able to share the event with our community next summer.”

The two Twin Cities nonprofit powerhouses announced 2020’s Rock the Garden lineup – which included Tegan and Sara, Brittany Howard, Polica, Dua Saleh and Gully Boys – in March, just days before the country shut down. The organizations announced they had canceled the event in early April.

The Walker launched Rock the Garden, which typically takes place each June outside the downtown Minneapolis museum, in 1998 and, since 2008, has co-presented it with The Current. Bon Iver, David Byrne, Chance the Rapper, Father John Misty, Flaming Lips, Lizzo, Sonic Youth, Spoon, Wilco and Trampled by Turtles are among the many national and regional acts that have performed at the event.
