Poetry writing winners to be known next week

Dar es Salaam. Winners of the third round of Ebrahim Hussein Poetry Award will be announced on September 23 during a gala organized to award them.

A statement from organisers of the event said in a statement that the award has been coined as a way of fostering Swahili literature.

“We are doing this by bringing to light and supporting the talent of writers of Swahili poetry and songs and also to increase the presence of quality writing of Swahili books,” reads part of the statement.

The award was established in accordance to wishes by Canadian filmmaker, late Gerald named after his friend and colleague – renowned poet, Professor Ebrahim Hussein.

The chairman of Committee of the Ebrahim Hussein Poetry Award, Demere Katunga, said the event has been jointly organized with Tanzania Gatsby Trust (TGT) and Mkuki na Nyota Publishers.

The third round of the poetry competition was announced on November 4, last year during the prize giving event and it was closed on April 30, 2017.

Panel of judges who went through the entries included Prof Mugyabuso Mlinzi Mulokozi from UDSM.
