BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK, Texas (AP) — A 20-year-old South Texas man has died after falling about 100 feet while hiking in Big Bend National Park.

Park officials say Brett Leondike of La Vernia died Wednesday afternoon while hiking on the Santa Elena Canyon trail in the southwest area of the park.

Authorities say the cause of the fall is under investigation. The trail was closed for about five hours.

Leondike is the second person to die this month while hiking in Big Bend National Park.

Officials say a 37-year-old San Angelo man died May 12 after park officials responding to a call for medical assistance found him unresponsive. The cause of death wasn’t immediately released.
